The Bethel AME Church — a place “where it is easy to find God, and hard to forget him” — is one of the oldest churches in the city of Tallahassee, Florida. It has been a transformative institution in the community for generations, ever evolving to meet the holistic needs of persons from all walks of life. One will find that Bethel is a diverse congregation, attracting individuals and families across socio-economic and educational spectrums.

The Sunday morning worship and learning experiences are insightful and engaging, richly flavored with elements of traditional and contemporary Christian culture. During the week, one can expect the friendly faces of Bethel to be actively engaged in a vast array of ministerial activities, from choir rehearsals and virtual leadership training sessions to neighborhood housing redevelopment projects. What should you wear to church?

There is no dress code.

What safety precautions are in place to minimize the spread of the coronavirus?

Among other things, we practice social distancing and ask worshippers to wear facial masks.

What genre of music is played in the worship service?

A variety of music – from traditional hymns to praise and worship to contemporary gospel.

Is there an alternative to in-person worship service?

Yes, we also offer worship services on Facebook, YouTube, and on a local television station (WTXL Channel 27 ABC). However, we do encourage you to join other worshippers for the in-person service.

Is there a Nursery available during in-person worship service?

Although there is a nursery room designed to accommodate small children, use of the room during worship service has been suspended until further notice. This is another one of the precautions the church has implemented in response to COVID concerns.

Is there Church (Sunday) School?

Absolutely! Church School is held every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. in various locations of the church.  Separate classes are designed for children, young people, and adults and are all taught by dynamic teachers.

What opportunities are provided for youth involvement?

Bethel prioritizes the spiritual growth and Christian fellowship of young people through a strong, viable Youth Ministry that includes youth choirs, a youth usher board, Children’s Church, and other opportunities for youth to serve the body of Christ.

Can church facilities be rented to members and nonmembers?

Yes. In addition to the beautiful sanctuary and administrative offices, the church complex is composed of the NZ Graham Chapel, choral room, computer room, classrooms, nursery, kitchen, and Fellowship Hall. Please contact the Church Office at 850-576-7501 for further information.

Where is the Church located?

Bethel AME Church is located at 501 West Orange Avenue, Tallahassee, FL. It is within walking distance of Florida A & M University and is on the city’s bus transportation route.

MEMBERSHIP

Bethel joyfully invites every person who is led by the Holy Spirit to become a member of our family of believers.

Full Membership
1. If, during a worship service or other church occasion, you wish to publicly confess Christ as Lord and Master and commit your life to Him, you may respond to the Invitation to Christian Discipleship extended by the pastor. You will be received for nurturing and discipleship training for a period of three (3) months. Upon completion of these studies, and on recommendation and approval of the pastor, you will receive full member at Bethel.
2. If you are a member of another local African Methodist Episcopal Church or a different Methodist branch (i.e., African Methodist Episcopal Church Zion, United Methodist Church, Church of the Nazarene, etc.), you may become a full member of Bethel by presenting a Certificate of Membership from your former church.
3. If you are a member of a denomination other than Methodist, you may become a member of Bethel by receiving nurturing and discipleship training. Upon completion of these studies, and on recommendation and approval of the pastor, you will be extended full membership.

Preparatory Membership
All youth through age 17 are under the care of the church until they have become full members.

Affiliated Membership
If you are a member of an AME Church and are residing in the community for an extended but temporary period, you may join Bethel as an Affiliate Member. Such membership entitles you the same privileges of other full members, including pastoral oversight, participation in all active services, and the right to hold office.
